Tech build to last: Lacie D2 hard disk enclosure

Et cetera

Unfortunately after almost 10 years of great service, my photo backup hard drive has encountered some troubles… I don’t know what was wrong because from my checks all was good, but I still wasn’t unable to tranfer files, after 4/5Gb it was failing every time. See these weird errors:

I tried to change filesystem, repair it with repairDisk and fscky, etc… but without luck

☹ …so it’s time to change the hard disk inside it! I opened this heavy enclosure from Lacie and I was pretty surprised to see how well this thing is made.

Unfortunately is no more on sale, you can see some photo or have some infos from DDG: Lacie D2 USB 3. It’s impressive to see the enclosure all made with aluminum and iron, there’s no single plastic part, and the heat dissipators on the board is… woooa guys! It has two heavy pieces of iron attached to the disk to dissipate the heat, it’s impressive and it weights more than the disk (without the disk inside obviously).

But for me is not dead, I’m going to swap the HDD for an SSD, for less than 50€ I can still use it. So I ordered a 3,5" to 2,5" Sabrent converter, installed it and it’s live again.

It works perfectly, the only downside is the speed that can’t reach the maximum of the drive of about 500Mbps due to the USB3 (not 3.1) connection, see screenshot

In the end, if you find somewhere online those Lacie enclosure for few buckets, and you want to use it as an HDD backup/storage, I think is perfect and very reliable due to the great heat dissipation.

The newer enclosures have USB C connection or Thunderbolt 3, but they’re way more expensive.
