Folder Actions to move tiny backups things where they should stay

Et cetera

I’m a very tidy guy, and I hate to a have a messy Desktop, and macOS is a very powerful OS, so why not just take advantage of it? I’m talking about a (sadly) forgotten app shipped with macOS: Automator.

I’m using the Automator Folders Action to move the backups of some of my “network devices”, in this example a DD-WRT router and the Pi-Hole, in their respective backup folders. Also because I noticed that sometimes I wasn’t making regular backups because I was too lazy to put the backups files in theirs respective folders :-) and live without a backup is a suicide, same as have a backup but you don’t know where is that damn backup or which file is the latest or the correct backup to import/use.

You can simply use my Automator actions to do the same, just open them before the use and choose your destination folders.

The folder where Automator saves his workflows is:

/Users/Home/Library/Workflows/Applications/Folder Actions

This workflows work if you use your Desktop as the download folder, in case you don’t use it, just change the Automator “watching folder”. You can use these folder actions for whatever you want, a lot of people are using Hazel app, well it’s a beautiful app but you don’t have to pay to do this easy things. It’s all built in your macOS.

Here are some of my backup workflows, just use them as example for yours: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2daoqa2nn4m8i9o/AAA_-o0in95rLT3QMeO-daGfa?dl=0

You can also rename the backup files/archives via Automator of course, I wouldn't do it because my devices already export the files with the date and name, and I prefer to not modify the name in order to be sure to don’t have troubles when re-importing the backup. Probabibly nothing will happen if you change the backup file name of a lot of devices but who know that a bug in the device with the file name and you can brick your/my router/pihole.
